rhubarb madness
When it comes to baked goods, I can pretty much be won over by anything that has rhubarb in it. Pies, cakes, muffins, you name it. I love it by itself and even more so when partnered with all manner of fruits. Over the past week or so I was on the hunt for a good recipe to kick off a rhubarb baking spree, inspired by the gorgeous tarts I spotted on forty-sixth at grace. And while my finished product is nowhere near as dainty, I still think it's a winner.
Allow me to introduce to my rhubarb galette.
Of course, it's not really my galette, it's Martha's. In addition to this recipe I bookmarked a whole bunch more (raspberry-rhubarb tarts anyone?) that I hope to try out before the season is over. All in all, this was pretty easy to make. The pate brisee was a little tricky for me, but it came out all right in the end. I would suggest rolling it out on the parchment paper to avoid tearing the dough when you find it's impossible to peel off your countertop... just saying. I was a bit worried it might be overly sweet, but the rhubarb definitely triumphs over the sugar and plays off the lemon juice very nicely.
I indulged this morning and had a piece for breakfast, but it would be a lovely dessert with a bit of vanilla ice cream on the side.

all these things
Today was full of all these things and more.
1. Setting our little plants outside to get used to sun and rain before we plant them. The tomatoes are positively leggy at this point, and the basil has just started to look like real plants instead of tiny sprouts. Today some romaine lettuce was added into out garden to be.
2. A rhubarb concoction that I plan to post more about tomorrow. Doesn't it look yummy?
3. A cheeping box arrived at the post office a few days ago. My brother is adding to his flock of chickens, which means that these little fluffballs are currently taking up residence in my parent's living room. They are at their very cutest right now, but they still manage to be just as canny and inquisitive as full grown chickens.

After far too many days laid up in bed, feeling pretty wretched, I'm about to head off to a place I've been dreaming about all week. Can you guess?

the best bedding
Since bedding tends to last for a long time (providing it's well made), I view it as somewhat of a luxury item. It's something I'm much more likely to put on a Christmas or Birthday list than buy for myself. But lately I keep spotting things that I'm just dying to put on my own bed. So here is a dream list. These are the quilts and covers I'd love to snuggle into at night.
Urban Outfitters has a rather lovely selection of bedding at the moment. I'm especially fond of the fanciful pennants.
Is it any surprise that I love the bedding from Anthropologie? The Out At Sea quilt caught my eye right away. And how lovely is that little bedroom nook? Very lovely indeed. 
I'm crazy about everything in the John Robshaw collection. These are two of my favorite quilts. Don't even get me started on the gorgeous sheets. Monday, May 24, 2010
monday music: tokyo police club
It was years ago that I saw Tokyo Police Club live, but I remember thinking to myself at the time that their music managed to capture the tenuous emotions that go along with youth perfectly. Which really wasn't that surprising, considering at the time all of the band's members were still in their teens. Now they're releasing album number two and, judging from the few songs I've heard so far, I'm going to like it just as much as the first. Their sound has matured while still retaining everything that made it special to me in the first place.

playing catch up
I had such fun during Polaroid Week this year. Lately I've been trying to improve my portrait skills and work up the courage to ask people to let me photograph them. Mostly I take pictures of the people I feel most comfortable around, but I think it's time to branch out. I have a pack of Artistic TZ film just waiting to be loaded into my camera. I love how the tones of this film look for portraits so I think that will be my next project.
For now, here are my shots from 'roid week. Oh, and one more thing... guess who was one of the lucky winners of a shiny new pack of film! I can't wait to test it out.
